Camille Vivier
2008 December 5

Camille Vivier’s photos astound me. Her short film, Jenny Haniver (as posted below) is a lyrical, slightly dark series of images. Jenny Haniver is a term used by sailors in reference to dried cuttlefish. Sailors would whittle the cuttlefish into imaginary creatures, such as devils, angels and dragons. It is said that this is where the lore of mermaids first began.
Her images have an intrinsic narrative quality, to which I am drawn. I love photos that seem to tell a story. It’s what encourages me to write.
